My Story of Pensioner Fitness

(By Ian McClymont – Founder of Pensioner Fitness)

From the Battlefield to the Body Battle

My Story of Pensioner Fitness. I spent much of my life in service — first to my country, then to others. I served in the British Army, rising to the rank of Warrant Officer, a position built on discipline, leadership, and responsibility. When I left the military, I continued to work internationally in security management, protecting people in some of the world’s most challenging and dangerous environments.

Later, in my 60s, I took on a new challenge — becoming General Manager for a mining minerals company in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It was demanding work, but I thrived on responsibility. Then life took an unexpected turn.

When the Work Stopped

During my home leave, the Ebola outbreak struck the DRC. For safety reasons, I couldn’t return. At first, I assumed it would just be a pause. But as time passed, opportunities dried up — and with them, my sense of purpose. Despite a lifetime of experience, I found myself unemployed.

I soon discovered the cruel truth: once you reach a certain age, doors begin to close. No matter how capable or skilled, I was now “too old.” It was frustrating, humbling, and deeply unsettling.

Finding Purpose Again

My Story of Pensioner Fitness. A few years slipped by, and by the age of 71, I was struggling not with work, but with direction. I had worked all my life — I needed something meaningful to focus on. So, I turned to an old friend: physical training.

I began searching online for fitness programs designed for older adults. There were many — great coaches, well-produced videos — but something didn’t sit right. Most of them were young trainers showing older people how to move.

That’s when it hit me: how could they possibly know what it feels like to live in a 70-year-old body?

Perfect form is one thing, but when your knees creak, your shoulders tighten, and your balance isn’t what it once was — you need more than technique. You need understanding.

The Wake-Up Call

My Story of Pensioner Fitness. When I first tried a few simple exercises, reality hit hard. I couldn’t even manage one proper press-up. I felt weak, embarrassed, and confused. How could someone who had spent his life being strong and active lose it all so quickly?

So, I began to research — and what I found changed everything.

I discovered Sarcopenia, the natural loss of muscle that begins in our 30s and accelerates with age. By the time we reach 70, we may have lost up to 40% of our muscle mass. No wonder I felt weak.

Then I learned about Somatopause, the gradual decline in human growth hormone (HGH) after midlife. It explains the “middle-aged spread,” slower recovery, and reduced bone density. In other words, the body’s natural systems that kept me strong and lean had gone quiet — unless I woke them up again.

The Turning Point

The good news? It doesn’t have to stay that way. Through resistance training — even simple exercises done at home — we can rebuild strength, boost bone density, and reignite those dormant systems. Age isn’t the barrier; inactivity is.

The more I trained, the stronger I felt. My confidence returned. My balance improved. I began to feel alive again.

But something else grew alongside my muscles — a desire to help others do the same.

Building Pensioner Fitness

My Story of Pensioner Fitness. Like many older adults, I live on a pension. Gym memberships and fancy equipment are costly — but I proved to myself that you can train effectively at home with everyday household items.

That’s how Pensioner Fitness was born.

It’s a place where I share fitness routines, flexibility and balance exercises, nutrition advice, and even personal security tips drawn from my years in international protection work. My goal is simple:

To help older adults stay strong, steady, and self-reliant — physically, mentally, and safely.

Together, We Get Stronger

My Story of Pensioner Fitness. Through Pensioner Fitness, I’ve discovered a new mission — to help others fight back against the effects of aging. You don’t need expensive gear or a gym membership. You need determination, guidance, and someone who truly understands what aging feels like.

Because together, we can not only add years to your life, but more importantly… add life to your years.
