Falling After Waking Up. Every year thousands of people over 65 years fall, and some 20% are fatal. As a result, a large number of falls happen in the house. In this case, many fall after waking up and getting out of bed to use the bathroom. Also, first thing in the morning. So then, if they are not fully awake, the risk of falling is high.
Why You Should Stretch Before Getting Up
Falling After Waking Up. When you wake up from sleeping, the instinct is to stretch. However, if you wake and need to go to the bathroom, you may get up and go. In this case, you are risking a serious fall. After, you awaken you should take the time to stretch and prepare your body for movement. As a result of stretching, you will generally feel good. So then, stretching after sleeping has benefits for your body, mind and spirit. So, if you spend a minute stretching, it will help prevent or lower your risk of falling. Before you stand up, spend a couple of seconds rotating your ankles; this will help prevent a stumble.
Muscles During Sleep
People often lie in the same position for an extended period of time when they are asleep. Consequently, this can make your muscles stiff and tight from lack of movement. So then, stretching after sleeping helps loosen and realign the muscles, irons out any kinks. And signals to your brain that it’s time to start using the muscles again. Because your body is normally warm from sleeping, it is ready for an effective dynamic stretch.
Blood Flow
Blood flow into muscles that are relaxed naturally decreases during sleep. But, stretching movements after sleeping get the circulation going again. Besides, the heart rate is slow before you wake. But increasing the circulation by stretching will help you move and function normally. Furthermore, stretching pushes the blood out to the extremities and invigorates you as you get up.
Flexibility, Balance and Your Posture
Falling After Waking Up. Stretching on waking helps loosen the muscles, that and the increased blood flow helps with flexibility. Increased flexibility has many health benefits and means less likelihood of experiencing poor balance. And this means you will be less likely to fall and suffer injuries. By the way, stretching daily can also help with posture. So then, if you have good posture, you are less likely to suffer back and other pain. And you will have more vitality and endurance.
In Conclusion
Feeling groggy after an afternoon nap, getting up in the middle of the night is a hazardous time for suffering falls. Try to resist just getting up and going; try to spend just a short time letting your system prepare for movement, a few seconds of stretching may prevent a serious fall. Remember, many older people die every year from falls, do not allow this to happen to you.
